A tribute to Vanuatu from the new United States Ambassador has the diplomat, Ms Irene Ebert-Gray, pointing out that Vanuatu was the only Pacific Island Country to qualify for Millennium Challenge Corporation ‘first compact’ funding. “This shows that Vanuatu has a proud record of ruling its people justly, of investing in its people, and of promoting economic freedom,” the new ambassador said when presenting her letters of credence to the Head of State. President Baldwin Lonsdale expressed his appreciation to the United States for the US$100,000 for Cyclone Pam recovery last year. (Daily Post)

The United States Woman of Courage award nomination for 2016 goes to Vanuatu’s Mrs Dorosdey Kenneth Watson. The citation says Vanuatu is empowered in the economic, political and civic arena. The award was announced in the US Peace Corps office. The new ambassador, who is based in Port Moresby, PNG, said she was pleased to announce the nomination. (Radio Vanuatu)

The Vanuatu Nurses Association is insisting the Public Services Commission deals quickly with their outstanding claims not picked up for action in the recent Supplementary Budget Debate in Parliament. Demands have proceeded from as long ago as last September. They also insist the rule book be followed closely as regards appointments being on probation for six months and being advertised. All financial claims are to be settled soonest. The VNA asks the PSC to proceed with the nurses’ claims as a priority issue. (Daily Post)

Vanuatu is (again?) banning the importation of right-hand drive vehicles. Bus drivers say we have heard this before and I am inclined to believe them. They allege conspiracy between certain authorities and importers enabling the practice. Daily Post today says the ban comes about following continuous importation of right-hand drive vehicles by returning RSE workers.
